The Pelkhil Judo Club dojo served as Bhutan’s first dojo from 2010 until 2021. In 2021, with financial support from the Government of Japan, a new dojo was inaugurated and serves as the home of Bhutan Judo. Most of Bhutan’s youth judoka and all of the elite national judoka train at this dojo..

The Gelephu Judo Club was opened in 2023 in Gelephu, in partnership with Gelephu Lower Secondary School. GJC now its own dojo in Gelephu through support from Gelephu Thromde. In addition, a new school club was opened in 2024 in Losel Gyatsho Academy in Gelephu.

The King of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was passionate about judo while he was a Crown Prince and felt that the strength, self-discipline and non-aggressive nature of judo was suited to the Bhutanese spirit.
