
His Majesty The King was an avid judoka as a Crown Prince and was the first to introduce Judo in Bhutan. In 2010, Pelkhil School open the first Judo Club, then known as the Pelkhil Judo Club.. In 2013, His Royal Highness, Prince Jigyel U. Wangchuck, President of Bhutan Olympic Committee, recommended that PJC become an affiliated sports federation under Bhutan Olympic Committee and in 2015, PJC formally assumed the form of Bhutan Judo Association. In 2016, Bhutan Judo Association was accepted as the 196th member federation of International Judo Federation, endorsed by the Executive Committee of IJF. Simultaneously, BJA also became a member federation of Judo Union of Asia and South Asian Judo Federation.
Currently, BJA serves as the National Sports Federation for Judo, in Bhutan.
